How to observe Long Distance Family & Friends Day #LDFFDay

Connect with loved ones

Life is busy but #LDFFDay is a reminder to pause. Take a moment to message your long distance loved one, arrange a video call, or even send a postcard!

Share traditions, old and new

#LDFFDay is a chance to share traditions - even recipes or games - whether passed through generations, adopted in new places, or started from scratch.

Appreciate our differences

Living between countries is an opportunity to teach ourselves and our kids about their own heritage, different cultures, and the wider world.

Combat stigma

Moving abroad comes with conflicting emotions, daily challenges and even judgement. Be vocal - talk about your experience, share your thoughts. You are not alone.

Engage with community

Having family abroad can be lonely so thank goodness for the people in your life who are present and can be there for you in person. Show gratitiude for each other on #LDFFDay.

How #LDFFDay started

Based on her own experience, the founder and author of Children's Books to Bond Over, Cassidy Lewis, understood the courage and sacrifice it took to raise family abroad, far from family and the country that made her.

When she realised there was a whole community out there who shared the same experience: the conflicting emotions, daily challenges, and even judgement, she became passionate about recognising the community's strength, tenacity, adaptability, openness, and intentionality when it comes to maintaining relationships and having a strong sense of belonging.

So she started her campaign to raise awareness and declare a national day that acknowledges:

  • the parents raising their kids without a “traditional” village;
  • the grandparents who miss their grandchildren so much it aches;
  • the children who grow up calling more than one country home;
  • the best friends who record hour-long voice messages for each other across time zones;
  • the solo travellers who left it all behind to start somewhere new;
  • and the people, old and new, who provide their love and support on both sides of the world.

About the Founder

Cassidy Lewis, who founded Children's Books to Bond Over in 2023, realized there needed to be a unified voice for family and friends who live far apart. Having started her campaign in 2026, she is calling for the community to come together for Long Distance Family and Friends Day.
